Engage Special Offer

If you are looking for a comprehensive look at social media and the power it holds for your business, Engage by Brian Solis is the book for you.

I read a lot of books, and over the past year or so I’ve read almost every single book published on social media. Which is sort of an ironic thing to do, when you think about it. I’ve also spent quite a good deal of time online implementing the suggestions and tips from those books, so I have a pretty good sense of what works and what doesn’t. One thing I’ve learned about those books and the people who write them is that there’s a HUGE difference between somebody who talks about this stuff and somebody who lives and breathes it. Brian Solis is the latter, and for that reason I think you should read his book.

Engage is Brian’s second book (his first was Putting the Public Back in Public Relations), and it’s simply the most comprehensive take on social media yet written.  If you want to go beyond the basics of what social media is and how you can join the various different social networks, this is a great place for you to start.

Close your door, put the phone on hold, and for the next 10 minutes watch this video summary of what you’ll get in Brian’s book

Yes, I know, you’re busy. But sometime today, find 10 minutes you can spare and watch this video summary of Brian’s book. My guess is that between all the meetings and paperwork you’ll be doing the rest of the day, this will be the most enjoyable and productive 10 minutes you’ll spend at work today. Need an excuse? This is professional development, baby.

Don’t have time for the video? Here are my top 5 takeaways from the book.

  1. Social media creates publishers. As Brian says, “Social media is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers.  It is the shift from a broadcast mechanism, one-to-many, to a many-to-many model, rooted in conversations between authors, people, and peers.  That’s an enormous change.
  2. Your customers are using social media. One of the most highly used excuses for not exploring the use of social media is “our customers are not using it”.  This may have been true two years ago, but not today.  Brian highlights some great research to prove this point in the book.
  3. You have to define an online persona. In order to define an online persona, you need to answer these 5 questions: (1) what is it that we want to accomplish, (2) how do we wish to be viewed, (3) how are we contributing to the depiction of the brand, (4) what do we stand for and what are our core values, and (5) where do we stand in the social networks.
  4. You have to define the rules of engagement. Creating a social media policy that works for your business is the best way to get over your fear that your brand will be “hijacked” online.
  5. Get started. There’s no use in watching a revolution from the sidelines.  Brian is a guy who practices what he preaches, and as much can be learned by watching him as you will from this book.

If that’s not enough to convince you that you need this book, surely you’ll listen to Tony Hsieh, right?

How much does Brian know about this stuff? Enough that what Brian speaks, plenty of people you’ve heard of and respect listen.  Including Tony Hseih, CEO of the now famous online retailer, Zappos.com. Here’s what Tony has to say about the book:

“Affinity is personal and emotional. Without personifying the company and what it symbolizes, it’s difficult for customers to connect with your brand. The concepts from this book can help your brand engage in a way that inspires communities to extend your message, promise, and reach.”
